TRX2 has an ongoing program of pre-clinical and clinical research focused towards refining our understanding of the molecular mechanisms behind hair loss and, ultimately, developing a cure (rather than a treatment).

Potassium Channel Study

Latest scientific studies implicate that the ATP-sensitive potassium channels Kir6.2/SUR1 and Kir6.1/SUR2B (here simply referred to as “potassium channels”) play an important role in human hair loss. Potassium channels can be found in the dermal papilla cells of hair follicles and are essential for the follicle’s full biological activity and function. However, the exact role and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear (read more).

Our study aims to uncover the biological role of potassium channels in hair loss in order to help us develop highly effective drug compounds that target those tiny protein structures.

Novel Compounds & Antibody Study

We are currently in the process of developing and testing a library of novel compounds as well as antibodies targeting potassium channels in hair follicles. TRX2 scientists have established a unique and highly sensitive bioassay (= biological test system), which allows rapid high throughput screening of a drug compound library. The goal is to develop and identify highly effective drug compounds as well as new antibodies targeting potassium channels in human hair follicles and eventually leading to novel and highly effective treatment options for various hair growth disorders, including pattern hair loss and Alopecia Areata.

Apoptosis Study

The molecular mechanisms behind hair loss are often associated with factors, which are also found in ageing, such as apoptosis (=programmed cell death).  Specifically TRX2 has been commissioning a study to look into how antioxidant and apoptotic factors in various cell compartments, such as mitochondria, influence hair growth.

Nutrition Study

We have nearly completed an extensive study on the influence of nutrition on the potassium channels in human hair follicles. TRX2 scientists were able to qualitatively and quantitatively examine the effects of various nutrients on potassium channels in human hair follicles, in particular the effects on:

• Channel synthesis
• Assembly of the channel within the lipid bilayer membrane
• Gating behavior (i.e. the opening/closing behavior of the channel)
• Channel activity (i.e. translocation of potassium ions across the membrane per time unit)

Our team has been testing and evaluating hundreds of experimental variations. The result is our newest product TRX2™ Molecular Hair Growth Supplement, which has been scientifically shown to help reduce hair loss and promote existing hair growth in a statistically significant number of customers having a variety of hair growth disorders*.

Attitudes on Hair Loss

TRX2 is currently commissioning a nationwide study to identify attitudes of customers toward hair loss. TRX2 is particularly interested in the following questions:

• At what age do men and women experience hair loss?• What aspects of hair loss are of greatest concern to customers?• To what extent do customers believe that hair loss is destiny?• Are customers taking appropriate action to ensure the best possible treatment of their hair disorder?• How do attitudes toward hair loss differ between men and women, and among various customer profiles?

TRX2 Ongoing Customer Study

Our study will measure hair weight, thickness, shedding, density and appearance. Pictures, comments and survey data will be provided on a rolling basis. All results will be posted online.
